Cervical Cancer Symptoms

It takes many years for cervical cancer to develop. The process starts with a high-risk HPV infection that leads to the development of abnormal cervical cells. Then, if the HPV infection does not disappear on its own, the abnormal cells can become worse over time until they finally develop into cancer. This process is currently thought to take 10 to 15 years.

The early stages

Neither HPV infection nor the abnormal cervical cells produce any obvious symptoms: no pain, no bleeding, nothing that would indicate something is wrong. Cervical screening is the only way to find these early stages at a time when they can be easily treated with a high degree of success.

At advanced stages

Once the abnormal cervical cells have progressed to cervical cancer, it can show symptoms such as:

  • vaginal bleeding after intercourse
  • unusual vaginal discharge
  • pain in the genital area

These can be caused by cervical cancer, but they can be caused by other conditions as well. Whatever the cause, you should immediately consult a doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
